Art isn’t whatever we feel it is or want or wish it to be – it’s firstly an ethos that sustains creative freedom. There are attacks on freedom that undermine any artist who makes or accepts them, because they remove the ground of art itself. You don’t impose an orthodoxy of silence on dissent. You don’t try to make artists give up their work for free. And you don’t declare thought crimes. Artists that lobby for those are creating the conditions for art as suicide.
