I’m sorry it’s unpopular to say, but Rome was pagan and, if there’s now a paganism that caters to social justice, peace, and liberality of conscience, it’s because it was tempered by a Christian ethos that actively promoted those things. There are bigots on all sides, but denying our historical debt to each other is yet another expression of bigotry, and it’s just as dumb as climate science denial or holocaust denial. Christians, after all, drew heavily from pagan art and culture. They also founded the first hospitals, which cared for pagans and Christians alike.
