I never submit to control. There’s always someone trying to make sure you answer to somebody, anybody, so they can feel better about you. But, like Bartleby, I prefer not to. It inspires some people to scorn or machination, but it makes me very happy. I would love that on my tombstone: “He answered to no one and nothing – even Death is not his master.”
