The Inkslinger is the master gunslinger of authorship and is Asher’s chief muse. Asher consults this person to try out ideas for writing, striving to get ever closer to that reservoir of emotion that can sustain his creative work for the long term. The Inkslinger is an obsessive artist who strives to help Asher differentiate between impulse and sustainable passion. Asher thinks it’s not coincidental that the Inkslinger looks a lot like Stephen King.
The Inkslinger is merciless with Asher. He sometimes loads a pen with a single bullet and sets it in front of Asher. “Point it at the page or at yourself, what’s it going to be?” Asher thinks this is a little extreme, but likes the sentiment.
