Boiler Room reminds me of Rounders. I like it almost as much, but not quite. At least it doesn’t have John Malkovitch trying to be Russian, as in Rounders. (He’s also played Italian in Knockaround Guys – which was even more painful for that. He should have kept his at least passible Italian accent from Man in the Iron Mask where we suffer mainly from his drama.) Boiler Room is fun for those of us who have been or are in sales, especially sales involving the telephone. The training maxims and attitudes are straight out of any such real training course. And here, they’re being used for diabolical purposes. Watch the cut scenes on the DVD w. this one, since they change the story a little and fill in some gaps. Guess I put this film w. Rounders, Ronin, and other naturalistic films with a romantic streak. It has the elements of a mood piece, with the added benefit of a plot, and the mood is that grey rain that some of us feel a good deal of the time.
